Exercise 7.2 Rhetorical Rhombus Questions

1.Questions from each of the four elements of the rhetorical rhombus for an essay arguing for drug testing prior to receiving federal food stamps or federal financial assistance.

Purpose-Based Questions
  1. Am I claiming that individuals on federal assistance abuse drugs?
  2. Do I want my intended audience to feel strongly about changing the federal guidelines to include drug testing before approving federal food stamp or financial assistance?
  3. With the evidence I bring to the claim, will I show that federal tax dollars are being used to sustain individuals who abuse drugs?
Audience-Based Questions
  1. Are the readers I would like to reach those who will support changing federal application guidelines to include drug testing?
  2. Will the audience have an opinion about drug abuser receiving federal assistance and how will they respond to the claim?
  3. What kind of information does the audience have already about the claim? What are the main sources of information and are they reliable or just opinions?
Writer-Based Questions
  1. Do I feel strongly that federal assistance such as food stamps and financial assistance be distributed to individuals that abuse drugs?
  2. Do I know facts and statistics about this issue already or am I getting my information based on personal experiences and my own judgements?
  3. Do I consider this important to spend time researching?
Subject-Based Questions
  1. Are there studies that show statistics of the number individual that receive food stamp or financial assistance and abuse drugs?
  2. What do I need to research to substantiate the claim that some individual receiving assistance are abusing drugs? 
  3. Will there be challenges to my views that drug testing is necessary? Will there be challenges that argue the expense of the drug tests?


2.Questions arguing for the best ways of dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace.


Purpose-Based Questions
  1. Am I claiming that there are several ways of dealing with sexual harassment and some are better than others?
  2. Do I want all organizations to adopt the best ways?
  3. Does the thesis statement nee to be more convincing?
Audience-Based Questions
  1. Are the readers I want to reach the administrators or human resources management teams?
  2. Does the audience feel that there are better ways of dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace?
  3. Will the audience benefit by knowing the the best ways and will they adopt them?
Writer-Based Questions
  1. Why is it important to argue the best ways to deal with sexual harassment?
  2. Do I feel strongly that there are best ways as opposed to not the best ways?
  3. Do I know anything about the ways that companies already use to deal with sexual harassment?
Subject-Based Questions
  1. Are there reports that show that there are better ways to deal with sexual harassment?
  2. What do I need to research to find the ways that have been used and how they measured whether they were useful or not?
  3. Will I consider the challenges of my claim that there are ways to better deal with sexual harassment?
3. Revised assertions
  1. Can the quality of the water that we drink be improved to meet the highest standards of drinking water?
  2. Does society consider males to be the dominant sex because they can bench press more than women?
  3. How can minorities benefit from having more courses available to them at the university level?
